“Instant Life”

Teacher: Josh Birnbaum

This year’s photography classes focused on leading the kids in documenting the moments in their daily lives using instant cameras and film — removing the artificial digital devices that stand between their inherent creativity and the media they make. In doing so, the class introduced children to the basics of photography including camera operation, guided documentary and artistic assignments, development of artistic instinct, collaborative editing, and visualization of moments that make up their existences.

They took the cameras around camp with them to document their friends and places they appreciate, and they took the cameras home to be able to use it to reflect in a private space on their personal connections to family, home and where they come from. The images produced showcase the way the kids see the world and what they feel is essential about them.
