Music
“Music For Empowerment”
Teacher: Jessica Fletcher
Each group worked together to develop a group or individual music project based upon their musical interest. This led to four distinct projects, each reflecting the unique identities of the youths involved. This included a group recording project & music video, rewriting the song “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes to feature a favorite superhero Spiderman. Another group wrote original songs and chose to perform live at the showcase, surprising family and friends with their skill on mostly newly-learned instruments, while one group chose to write individual, MIDI/digitally based songs through various digital audio workspaces.
In each group, individuals learned multiple instruments, including the drum set, keyboard, bass guitar, electric guitar, and MIDI instrument/Beatmaking. Music projects were each based on bringing together diverse musical interests (including alternative rock, Hip Hop, country, and pop) in a strengths-based class, focused on improving socialization opportunities and empowerment.
