Fashion

Instructor: Patty Marcus - Mellissa Miller - sandra russell

Intern: Selena L Wilkinson

Students started their creative fashion process by looking through fashion magazines, creating a "mood board", and sketching.  Their goal was to design and create an original outfit or article of clothing that expressed their fashion sense, personality, and imagination.  We discussed colorl, texture, style, as well as the endless possibilities that come with repurposing or restyling an already existent piece of clothing.  Many students decided to make an original outfit from scratch.  Others redesigned articles of clothing that they already owned, so that the result was a more accurate representation of themselves and their own special style.

Students cut out their fabric choices from patterns which were custom made to their design.  They were also given the option of silkscreening fabric, painting, and dying fabric.  Most of these students had no previous sewing experience, but, by the end of our three busy weeks, they had managed to pull together some fabulous creations using very sophisticated equipment.  Many learned embroidery, some sewed in zippers, others did appliqué .  At the end our our three weeks, these students put on a "Runway Show" in Stuart's Opera House that was amazing!  How rewarding for us, as instructors, to see them "strut" down the runway in their custom designs.  Their sense of joy and pride was obvious.  At the close of their show, there was a giant spontaneous group hug, with all of them, 6th through 12th grade students, supportive of each other and proud of what they had all managed to accomplish!
